The EMH (hitherto referred to as Doctor) activated on the U.S.S. Voyager on stardate 48308, after ship was violently swept into the Delta Quadrant by alien entity. The passage killed ship's chief medical officer, leaving Doctor as sole medical personnel. Soon thereafter, he began training Kes (see file) as his assistant. After Kes's departure from Voyager in 2374, his main assistant has been Lieutenant Tom Paris.
Programmed with over 5 million possible treatments, information from 2,000 medical references, and the experience of 47 physicians, the Doctor 's advanced multitronic pathway programming has provided first-rate medical care to the crew, including creative new treatments. In 2374, Doctor adapted Borg assimilation nanoprobes to cure Ensign Harry Kim of a painful alien infection by Species 8472 -- technology that was successfully employed by Captain Janeway to make the first historic alliance between Federation personnel and the Borg.
The Doctor's complexity makes him a sentient life-form; has undertaken numerous projects to understand human nature. His personality program has grown and evolved, expanding his service to the ship, On first "away mission, " stardate 48892, made first contact with a photonic being that had invaded the holodeck and caused several crew members' disappearance. In 2372, when hostile Kazon raiders commandeered Voyager and abandoned the crew on a planet, Doctor, along with crewman Lon Suder, was instrumental in re-taking control of the ship.
The Doctor was originally limited to sickbay, holodecks, or other areas with holo-emitters. After stardate 50312.5, he received a 29th Century autonomous holo-emitter, which has since then allowed him to operate anywhere, including off-ship. In 2374, using a Hirogen communications array, Doctor's holographic signal was sent back to the Alpha Quadrant. He arrived on the U.S.S. Prometheus, which he helped liberate from a Romulan takeover, and contacted Starfleet, giving the Federation first word from Voyager since its disappearance.
